Negative Features on Negative Indefinites: Evidence from Split Scope

چکیده

The assumption that negative indefinites are semantically non-negative elements associating with sentential negation has proven fruitful to account for the behaviour of negative indefinites in languages exhibiting negative concord. Under this view, negative indefinites carry a negative feature that has to be licensed by a semantic negation. This paper critically discusses and evaluates different ways in which the notion of negative features can be spelled out. Particular attention is paid to approaches that build on the indefinite nature of negative indefinites and postulate that negative indefinites have to be bound by a negation operator (e.g. Ladusaw, 1992; Kratzer, 2005). It is shown that such analyses are problematic in light of the fact that another semantic operator can take scope in between the negation and the negative indefinite. Parallel data have been discussed for negative indefinites in German and Dutch under the label split scope (e.g. Jacobs, 1980; de Swart, 2000; Abels and Mart́ı, 2010).

On the syntactically complex status of negative indefinites

Negative Indefinites (NIs) in languages such as Dutch and German may give rise to split-scope readings. Sentences like German Du must keine Krawatte anziehen (‘you must wear no tie’) have a reading where the modal takes scope in between the negation and the indefinite. In this paper I argue that West Germanic NIs are not negative quantifiers (in the Montegovian sense), but complex syntactic str...

On Epistemic Indefinites: a Note on Emphatic Free Choice Uses∗

Epistemic indefinites (henceforth EIs) are existentials that when used in a positive context convey information about the speaker’s epistemic state (e.g. Jayez and Tovena, 2006, Alonso-Ovalle and Menéndez-Benito, 2010): they signal that the speaker is unable to identify the individual that satisfies the existential claim. In some languages EIs can also be used in negative contexts to convey nar...

On the Interpretation of Wide-scope Indefinites*

theory of wide-scope indefinites which is similar, though not identical, to that proposed by Kratzer (1998). I show that a subset of St’át’imcets indefinites takes obligatory wide scope with respect to if-clauses, negation, and modals, and is unable to be distributed over by quantificational phrases. These wide-scope effects cannot be accounted for by movement, but require an analysis involving...

Choice Functions and the Scopal Semantics of Indefinites

The exceptional scopal behaviour of indefinite NP’s is a long-standing challenge for syntactic and semantic theories. Plural indefinites trigger also distributivity effects that introduce further complications in the problem of scope. Taking these interactions into account, the present paper proposes a revision in standard approaches to the syntax and semantics of indefinites. Following Reinhar...

On the Scope Interaction of Japanese Indefinites: An Epsilon Calculus Approach

This study explores the scope properties of some indefinites in Japanese in terms of epsilon calculus. Different from ordinary noun phrases, quantificational noun phrases like indefinites are assigned higher-order categories and/or types in syntax, and taken to denote functions from sets to truth values in semantics, which results in great difficulty in deriving proper interpretations of senten...
